Arkadi Monastery – Margarites Pottery Village -Picnic lunch – Melidoni Cave – Swimming and Snorkeling

First we collect you by bus from your hotel and drive to the monastery of Arkadi.
Before we set off on our bikes you will have a chance to visit the historic and very famous monastery. Arkadi played a very important part in Crete’s history of resistance against the Turks and you will also be able to see a fascinating collection of icons, weapons and clerical items in the museum. We then get on our bikes and cycle through stunning scenery, olive groves and orange trees, passing through the villages of Amnatos, Kyrianna, Loutra and the lovely village of Asteri. Here you will get a glimpse of how Cretan people still live and work in the traditional way. We then pass through Hamalevri and eventually arrive at Stavromenos and Scaleta, where the bus will be waiting to take us to Margarites. But before we get on the bus you can enjoy a nice coffee next to the sea.

After a pottery demonstration from Eleni Kavgalaki and the unique chance to watch her demonstrating with such a beautiful way how a pottery is being made. After the demonstration and the visit in the shop where you can buy souvenirs for your beloved ones back home, you can enjoy a beautiful lunch, relaxing just outside the pottery factory under the trees, in the nature.

After the lunch and just outside the village we get back on the bikes and you will get a chance to explore this beautiful location, which has been famous for its pottery for centuries. Then we cycle down to Perama, before hopping back on the bus to drive to Melidoni and visit the famous cave. The history of this amazing archaeological site goes back thousands of years and it is said to be the mythical home of Talos, the giant bronze protector of Crete. From here we get back on the bus and visit a sandy beach, where you can snorkel, swim or just laze in the sun, before we take you back to your hotel at the end of a perfect day.

If at any stage of the day you wish to hop onto the bus for a rest, no problem. We just put the bikes on the trailer and continue.

We recommend you bring swimming costumes, money (not credit cards) for coffee breaks and the extras and wear comfortable shoes and clothing.

Included in the price: Guide, insurance, bike hire and equipment, support vehicle, lunch and use of snorkeling equipment.

Extras to be paid separately: Entrance to Arkadi and entrance to the Melidoni Cave.

Please note that all visits are optional.

    “Highly recommended”
Having recently rented 3 bikes from Crete Bikes I must say that the choice of bikes, customer service and cost are very good indeed. The choice of guided cycle tours that they offer is excellent and are very good value for money. We are not experienced cyclists but they cater for differing levels of ability so you don’t feel embarrassed. All in all highly recommended.

    “Bike trip”
I enjoyed this bike trip very much, it was well planned despite some things going wrong (BBQs issues, ran out of gas etc), solutions came quickly and we were well taken care of (plenty of water, fresh fruit, lovely coffee and excellent food, bathroom stops), the places we visited were simply breathtaking and all quite different! We could opt for a car ride at any time if we had enough, but the ride was not difficult at all. Extra expenses were well explained before hand. Great hosts, plenty of laughs! Nice cold beer at an amazing beach at the end. Well worth it!

    “Great day out”
We had a great day out with Greg, Jason, Sterios and Myros. Arkadi monastery is fascinating (worth a few more minutes?), pottery demonstration instructive and not overdone, great barbecue, melidone cave impressive and touching, final swim delicious. Well organised, decent bikes, and a good laugh – and we saw eagles or vultures depending who you believe! Took great care of Grandad who didn’t ride and one of our group who fell off. There are a couple of uphill bits which demand a basic level of fitness in the heat, but overall a great way to see some of the sights.

    “Very obliging and helpful”
Great place to hire a quality make (Trek mainly) hybrid or mountain bike. Well maintained and safe bikes ideal for cycling into the mountains. Some great local cycling climbs are on the doorstep like a trip up to Arkadi Monastry – over 500 metres of climbing. Also took the kids out on another day and had quality bikes to fit them too. Age 10 and 12. Recommended. Thank you Kostas.
